The Change Up is an exercise in opposites. Dave (Bateman) is an overworked lawyer and family man, cheap coach purses , while his best friend Mitch (Reynolds) is a slacker actor. While peeing in a fountain and envying each others’ lives, they accidentally switch bodies and must go about as the other until they can figure out how to reverse the switch.
Ryan Reynolds should do more comedy. He’s hilarious whether as Mitch who has no responsibilities and nothing expected of him or as Dave, a very successful lawyer in the middle of the most important week of his career hoping that his nincompoop best friend – now inhabiting his body – doesn’t mess up his job and his already rocky marriage. His expression (as Dave) when surveying the squalor that is Mitch’s apartment is priceless; especially when he gets a look at the fridge.
A lot of the humour comes from Mitch’s ineptitude with Dave’s young daughter, abercrombie uk , Cara, and his baby twins. You’re not laughing with the sexist jerk, you’re laughing at the depth of his misogyny. In addition, Dave’s wife Jamie (Mann) is portrayed in a surprisingly sympathetic manner when she could have very easily been written off as the nagging wife. Mann does a great job merging the emotional and the comedic, and she ends up being the film’s heart. Jamie’s married to a man who, although perfect on paper, is never satisfied. She barely sees him because he’s so caught up with his work and while she knows that he loves her and that he’s fully committed to the family, she doesn’t feel it because he’s hardly ever around.
By the end, both men have realized that neither of their lives are as perfect as they made them out to be and are fully ready get their own lives back on track again. While The Change Up is pretty formulaic (It’s basically Freaky Friday for dudes) and you can tell exactly what’s going to happen from a mile away, it’s funny and light and never grates on.

For those that enjoy films that give us glimpses into people’s lives and let us be passersby to their experiences, then Carnage is an absorbing feature. Liking this film doesn’t make one snooty at all, some of us just don’t always require direct plot nor overwhelmingly “beautiful” people to be entertained. In this case, it’s the death of a bull after a bullfight. The bull is butchered and the different parts go out to people in different European countries. That part is really incidental, as the main concern is how these folks’ lives interconnect and lives are lost, saved, secrets revealed, and friendships made. I confess I was slightly confused by some of the conversations and revelations, but that did not wreck the experience for me, it just meant I had to go back and view it again at some point to absorb the story better.
The actors in Carnage were quite refreshing to see, they seemed like real people instead of pristine mega-stars. I must disagree strongly with a reviewer here who kept insisting, for instance, that the naked people in the primal scream therapy scenes were all fat and not ones you’d want to see naked. Look around you and you’ll see 99% of people are not beautiful models, and to just have naked beautiful models in the pool would have made the entire scene unbelievable. My only discomfort with Carnage are the scenes of the bullfighting. I abhor any abuse of animals, and seeing the poor bulls being slowly killed to the delight of a crowd upset me. In Hong Kong, English uncovers a plot by a group of international assassins (one spy each from KGB, CIA and MI7) which is planning to eliminate the Chinese prime minister at an upcoming summit with the British premier. The key to stopping the conspiracy is to find the three parts of a key to a lock, which is the gateway to a secret weapon that the assassins possess. English and Tucker must employ the latest hi-tech gadgets at their disposal in order to foil the conspiracy. Is the simpleton, English, able to foil the conspiracy? What hurdles does he have to surmount to do so? The rest of the film answers these questions.
First things first – fans of Rowan Atkinson (whether of his iconic Mr. Bean or the previous Johnny English film) will enjoy this movie more than the others because William Davies’ story relies mainly on the character of the bumbling but adorable spy, Johnny English, to create mirth. Otherwise, Hamish McColl’s screenplay leaves much to be desired. The plot takes too much time to come to the point, because of which a majority of the audience will start losing interest. Besides cheap five fingers , a few sequences in the film (like the fight scene in Hong Kong) are too lengthy and boring, in spite of a spirited performance by Rowan Atkinson.
The narrative gains momentum at around half-time, when Johnny English meets the British prime minister (the scene where Johnny English lowers and raises his chair in quick succession will have the audience in splits). The jokes on James Bond (right from the spoofy title sequence) are entertaining. The dialogues are witty and enjoyable at many places.However, the climax of the film is rather poorly-written except, perhaps, for the surprise ending. The long-drawn action sequence in the end is also boring. All in all, the script is of the kind that will appeal only to fans of Rowan Atkinson and to those who like watching spoofy comedy films.
There’s even a Batman-inspired ‘reboot origin story’, since Hollywood clearly thinks Tibet is the best place in the world to train a superhero. English, who is shown mastering several useful techniques such as having an indestructible crotch, is recalled from the mountains by British intelligence agency MI-7 after years of self-exile following a botched operation in Mozambique. 1) Ability to show a wide range of emotions. Judges at the auditions for actors would expect you to move with the tune; this means that when it is time to show shock open your eyes as wide as you can and place your hand at the mouth. 5) Easy to work with. Acting judges prefer people who are able to grasp concepts easily and follow simple instructions. 6) A good match for the part they are casting. This has to do with the kind of personality you have. If they are casting a rogue person then you have to indicate roughness and a rude attitude.
